Big Carp Are Happening...NOW!

Many New Jersey anglers don't realize it, but we live in one of the best locations in the United States to fish for carp. Carp fishing is very popular in many places throughout the world, but for the most part these freshwater giants aren't sought after by many people in the U.S. Only in recent years has fishing for carp begun to gain popularity in this country, and as carp anglers grow in numbers and discover untapped fisheries more and more reports of great catches begin to surface.

In recent years the tidal fresh waters of New Jersey have produced fish of gargantuan proportions. The combination of abundant food sources and the sheer size of these rivers, particularly the Passaic, Hudson, Raritan, and Delaware, allow carp to grow into true giants. Multiple 40-pound specimens captured over the past few years have put New Jersey on the map in the carp fishing world.

The month of May tends to be the best month of the year to target giant carp. These pre-spawn fish are at their heaviest then and eat as much as possible before they spawn. So far, this May, carp weighing 33.2, 38.8 and 30 pounds have been landed and documented.

Dedicated carp angler Matt Janiszewski recently contacted us about a giant carp he landed. Here, in his own words, is the story of his Raritan River monster catch:

"On May 9th, 2011 I landed my personal best carp of 42.2 pounds, and when I woke up on Wednesday morning May 9th, 2012 I never would have dreamed I'd catch a 50 + pounder on the 1 year anniversary of my personal best.

"This time of year, when the water is in the 60's, carp tend to love feeding on oats, so I was using a hair rigged oat ball for bait with a mixture of oats and creamed corn molded around my lead. Around 1:00 p.m. I had some bumps on my middle rod so I picked it up and the fish was there. It took about 75 yards of line out and I slowly reeled it back in. The fish sat right in front of me, swimming back and forth like a dog on a leash, for about 20 minutes, before I finally got it in the net.

"When I saw the size of the fish I knew I had something special. I quickly put it in my weigh sling and then on my scale……55.29 pounds in the sling! I was shocked. Without the sling the fish weighed 53 pounds 12 ounces, smashing the 1995 state record of 47 lbs. I got the fish back into the sling, zipped it up, put it back in the water, and called my buddy down to take some pictures.

"As I was waiting for my buddy, I called biologist Mark Boriek at NJ Fish & Wildlife to see if he or another biologist could come down to the river with a NJ State certified scale to verify the record. He said they couldn't make it down, and the certified scale at their office only goes up to 50 lbs. I would have had to kill the fish, and bring it to one of their hatcheries for a certified scale weighing if I wanted it as an official record.

"The carp was full of eggs, and it was more important to me to have the progeny of that fish in the river for years to come, than having my name in the NJ State Record Book. So, my friend Donald showed up a few minutes later, and after a quick photo shoot of the fish, I released it, unharmed. It was truly the fish of a lifetime, and one I'll never forget."

Congratulations to Matt on his record-size fish, and for his commendable sense of ethics in releasing this fish so that others may enjoy fishing for monster carp in the Raritan.

New Jersey Updates Recreational Fish Consumption Advisories...

As a public service, the Department of Environmental Protection and the Department of Health and Senior Services today reminded anglers to be aware of routine fish advisories that are in place for fish caught recreationally in New Jersey. These advisories allow members of the public to make informed choices about the fish they catch and eat.

While water quality in New Jersey continues to improve, past pollution can persist for many years in sediments and continue to accumulate in fish at or near the top of the aquatic food chain. As a result, some recreationally caught fish can contain mercury, PCBs and pesticides that may be unhealthy for children or some adults with certain health concerns.

The DEP recently updated its advisories to incorporate results of new sampling for lakes, ponds and reservoirs that flow into the Delaware River. This sampling round, the last in a five-region statewide cycle, resulted in fish advisories being posted at 14 new water bodies.

"Before heading out to go fishing, anglers should take a few minutes to review advisories in place for their favorite fishing spots so they can make good decisions about eating the fish they catch," DEP Commissioner Bob Martin said.

All states have fish consumption advisories. Many of the fish on New Jersey's advisory lists are typically caught and released without being consumed, but some people rely heavily on some of the species on the advisory lists as a food source.

"By following the guidelines in our advisories, the public can safely include fish and other seafood they've caught as a part of their healthy diet," said DHSS Commissioner Mary E. O'Dowd.

The DEP and DHSS update fish consumption advisories regularly. The revised fish consumption advisories include statewide, regional and water body specific advice, and a general advisory for freshwater fish.

The DEP and DHSS advise all anglers to get the latest advisories for the specific water body they fish by visiting www.fishsmarteatsmartnj.org.

For much of the population, the majority of advisories can range from no restrictions to a recommendation to limit consumption to one meal per week. For the high risk population - which includes pregnant women, women planning to become pregnant, nursing mothers, infants and children - advisories can range from no more than one meal per week to do not eat.

If you choose to eat those species under advisories, there are steps you can take to reduce your exposure. Contaminants tend to concentrate in the fatty tissue of the fish.

Proper cleaning and cooking techniques, which remove some of the fat from the fish, can significantly reduce levels of PCBs, dioxins and other organic chemicals. However, these techniques will not reduce or remove unsafe levels of mercury from fish.

For all freshwater fish and waters not covered by consumption advisories, consumers should follow the DEP's general freshwater advisories, which recommend eating no more than one meal per week for the general population and no more than one meal a month for high-risk individuals.

For decades, the DEP has been warning the public to not eat blue claw crabs taken from the lower Passaic River and Newark Bay complex due to elevated levels of dioxin contamination from pesticide production during the Vietnam War era. The DEP and federal Environmental Protection Agency last month announced the start of the first phase of a massive project to remove sediments contaminated with these chemicals.

Atlantic Sturgeon Research in Delaware Bay...

The NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife has deployed 7 acoustic receivers in Delaware Bay to track migration patterns of Atlantic sturgeon. With the recent endangered species listing of Atlantic sturgeon, effective April 6, 2012, research on this species has gained significance.

The receivers are generally set in water depths less than 20 feet. Those fishing in inshore waters may encounter the white buoys marked "NJDEP Research" which should be avoided.

Two New Saltwater Record Fish Certified...

The NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife has officially certified, and is pleased to announce, the catch of two new state record marine fish.

Robert Macejka of Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey reeled in the new state record Hickory Shad on November 20, 2011. The fish weighed in at 2 pounds 13 ounces eclipsing the previous state record by 13 ounces. Robert was fishing from the surf at Mantoloking and using a St. Croix Triumph rod and Penn reel when he landed his catch.

The other state record was reeled in by Raul de la Prida of Elizabeth, New Jersey on February 10, 2012. His 3 pound ½ ounce Cunner was caught fishing from the Norma K III off Point Pleasant and measured 16 inches in length with a girth of 13 inches. Raul was using an Ugly Stick rod and Penn boat reel with clam as bait. The previous state record weighed in at 2 pounds 9 ounces.

Three years ago, South Jersey Marina hosted a new boat show specifically designed to appeal to the serious boating enthusiast. Unlike conventional, long-running boat shows that seek to attract the general, non-boating public, South Jersey’s new show has sought to reach out to a specific demographic, boaters!

For the first three years, this new boat show was called the Strictly Jersey Boat Show. Summer Flounder and Black Sea Bass Regulation Changes...

The NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife is informing anglers of the recent changes for summer flounder and black sea bass regulations for 2012 fishing season.

The recreational summer flounder regulations for 2012 are as follows:

* minimum size limit of 17.5-inches

* bag limit of 5-fish per person per day

* open season from May 5 through September 28.

The recreational black sea bass regulations for 2012 are:

* minimum size limit of 12.5-inches

* bag limit of 25-fish per person per day

* open season from May 19 through October 14 and November 1 through December 31.

Please note that the black sea bass season regulations will likely change again. Anglers should check the division's website for future changes . The division will also notify subscribers to the NJ Marine Fishing E-mail List about changes pertaining to these or other marine species - see http://www.njfishandwildlife.com/lstsub.htm for information on the list and how to subscribe.

The Division would also like to remind all saltwater anglers ages 16 and older to register with the free NJ Saltwater Recreational Registry Program

(NJSRRP) annually. The NJSRRP was established in 2011 to exempt NJ anglers from having to register with the National Saltwater Angler Registry and having to pay the $15.00 federal registration fee. In order to register, go to http://www.saltwaterregistry.nj.gov/.

The Division of Fish and Wildlife is seeking the assistance of NJ's saltwater anglers. Since 2009, the Division has conducted an online volunteer angler survey to collect information on recreationally important marine finfish species. Information collected through this voluntary survey will provide data which may support alternative management strategies that increase fishing opportunities for the public. The focus of this voluntary survey is to collect catch and effort information from fishing trips in marine and estuarine waters of the state and surrounding areas. DEP DEDICATES CAPE MAY WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA, STOCKS TROUT IN...

The Department of Environmental Protection today formally dedicated the Cox Hall Creek Wildlife Management Area, made possible by a Green Acres Program purchase of the former Ponderlodge Golf Course in Lower Township on the ecologically important tip of the Cape May peninsula.

“The DEP has worked very closely with the local community every step of the way in the acquisition and restoration of this site, which provides critical habitat to a wide variety of plant, animal and bird species in one of the state’s most ecologically critical regions,” Division of Fish and Wildlife Director David Chanda said during dedication ceremonies today. “Equally important, this Wildlife Management Area is providing wonderful opportunities for the public to enjoy nature and the outdoors.”

The dedication of the Wildlife Management Area, which is located in the Cox Hall Creek watershed, was marked by the release of more than 500 trout raised at the DEP’s Pequest Trout Hatchery into Flynn’s Pond, an eight-acre lake in the heart of the Wildlife Management Area.

The opening day of trout season, falling on April 7 this year, is the most anticipated day on the annual fishing calendar. Prior to opening day, the DEP stocks more than 180,000 trout in nearly 200 waterways, followed by the stocking of nearly 400,000 more trout over a seven-week period. Flynn’s pond, now the state’s southernmost trout water body, will receive some 2,000 trout in the coming weeks.

“Fishing is part of our heritage, and this location gives our residents another place to relax, enjoy the natural beauty of the setting, while hopefully enduring the occasional interruption of landing a fish,” said Lower Township Mayor Michael Beck. “The handicapped accessible fishing pier will make it possible for all to participate, including those limited by disabilities. This former Ponderlodge site has become part of the daily routine for many of our residents, and the addition of a stocked pond gives us all another reason to visit this area. We appreciate the opportunity to partner with DEP on this project and other projects in the future within our township.”

Cox Hall Creek provides habitat for juvenile and adult bald eagles, osprey, American kestrel, and a variety of swallows, warblers, woodpeckers, flycatchers and a host of other birds.

Because of its unique configuration and geographic location along the Atlantic Flyway migration route, millions of songbirds, raptors, and shorebirds are funneled into the lower portion of the peninsula. This area also serves an essential role during the migration of many bat, butterfly, and dragonfly species.

The Ponderlodge Golf Course is the centerpiece of $8.4 million in Green Acres land acquisitions that led to the creation of the Wildlife Management Area. The Division of Parks and Forestry also utilized nearly $892,000 from the constitutionally dedicated Corporate Business Tax and other capital funds to demolish buildings, improve roads, install the dock and make other capital improvements.

The site has quickly become popular with local residents for bicycling, walking, fishing and bird watching. The Wildlife Management Area was closed for several months in early 2011 for the demolition of a lodge and other structures and for improvements to the trail system developed from a former golf cart path network.

The DEP's Division of Fish and Wildlife has been restoring and enhancing the course, marking trails, adding interpretive signs, installing nest boxes and placing a universally-accessible fishing pier in the pond. In addition the DEP is working with the Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey on multiple habitat restoration projects and a backyard habitat demonstration area at the site. So far, over 1,500 trees have been planted as part of this effort.

The stocking of Flynn's Pond includes 480 production-run brook trout and 50 bonus broodstock brown trout. A production-run trout averages 10.5 inches and weighs about a half pound. Broodstock fish are 2 to 4 years old that exceed 18 inches in length and weigh more than 1.5 pounds.

The bonus broodstock program provides anglers with the opportunity to catch the trout of a lifetime, which can weigh as much as eight pounds and run 24 inches long. Flynn’s Pond was chosen to be in the bonus brood tock program because of its proximity to a large population center in a county with limited trout fishing opportunities.

Delaware River Fishing Reports 2012...

The NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife is reminding anglers that information on early season Delaware River fishing is posted on the division's website. Every year American shad migrate up the Delaware River to spawn, and the numbers and timing of the "shad run" vary year to year depending on water temperature and conditions. Consulting the Delaware River Fishing Reports page can provide anglers with information to help make every fishing trip a success.

April 1 2012 Deadline for Coldwater Conservation School Applicat...

The April 1 2012 application deadline is rapidly approaching for the limited number of slots still available for the Coldwater Conservation School being offered by the NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife and the NJ State Council of Trout Unlimited. The NJ School of Conservation in Sussex County will once again be the host site for the School, which will be held from June 28 - July 1.

The goal of the School is to foster a knowledge and appreciation of trout and the coldwater habitats on which they depend. Division of Fish and Wildlife biologists and instructors from Trout Unlimited will teach sessions about stream ecology, fish habitat, fish biology and identification, aquatic insect identification, fly tying, fly-casting, and stream restoration. There will be plenty of free time to test out newfound casting and fly tying skills, as well as special evening presentations.

The cost of the Coldwater Conservation School is only $200.00, which includes food, lodging and equipment for the entire 4 days and 3 nights. Applicants must be between the ages of 11 and 14 prior to July 1. Applications are due no later than April 1, 2012. Students accepted into the School will be notified by the end of April.
